Health and safety

We work hard to create a safe environment at UNT. Our Eagle Alert System sends voice and text information about campus closings and emergency situations affecting the safety and well being of people on and around our campus. UNT police patrol the campus 24 hours a day. At night, the campus is well lit, and students may request pick up from e-ride, get a Lyft ride back to their residence halls or to their cars on campus from 2 – 7 a.m. or call the UNT police for an escort, if needed.

UNT offers a full-service primary care clinic, with full-time physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses to manage your child's care and treatment.

  • Student Recreation Center
    Students have access to the Pohl Recreation Center, where you can swim, lift weights, rock climb, take classes and get your cardio between classes.
  • Counseling and Testing
    UNT’s Counseling Center offers professional counseling, mental health screenings, educational programs and self-help resources.

    We offer many options for getting around campus without a car. Students can use UNT Shuttle, late night e-ride or Denton County Transportation. If your student uses a bike on campus, they now have access to the UNT Mobile Bike Shop.

Parent programs and the Parent Association

There are many ways for you to get involved at UNT! Parent and Family Orientation allows you to meet faculty and administrators and become familiar with the campus. The UNT Parent Association can help you stay connected and build friendships with other parents, as well as let you know about upcoming family events.

Events for parents and family

To help ensure that your child makes a successful transition to college, attend parent orientation, which is held concurrently with each freshman orientation session and transfer orientation session. We also encourage parents, grandparents, siblings and friends to join us for Family Weekend, which is held each fall. Events include a football game, chili cook-off and activities for siblings.

Visit Us

We encourage you to visit the campus and take a guided tour. You'll find out what UNT offers, become familiar with the campus and have a chance to ask our student tour guides questions.


Here are a few of the most important things you can do with your students to get them ready for their first year at UNT. 

Next steps for your student
  • Help your students complete the FAFSA or the TASFA as early as possible.
    • The TASFA application opens Oct. 1
    • The FASFA application typically opens each year on Oct. 1. Check gov for important updates.
  • Even though your student is admitted, keep an eye out for missing checklist items in the myUNT Students must submit their official high school transcript after they graduate.
  • Your student must complete the Texas Success Initiative requirement before they register for classes.

  • Orientation is an important event for you and your student! Sign up for Parent Orientation at the same time as your student’s required orientation.
  • While you’re at Orientation, spend some quality time with your student around Denton and get to know why we’re so proud to be a part of the “Little D” community.
Get Connected
  • Sign up for the Parent Association
  • Follow UNT’s official social media accounts to stay up to date.
  • Join the Mean Green Family Facebook page, an unofficial group run by UNT parents to ask questions and get tips for your student.
  • Encourage your student to join the Mean Green Mentors network to connect with supportive alums.

  • Get ready for First Flight Week:
    • First Flight is a week of activities between move-in and the start of classes that welcomes your student to UNT and helps them start their college experience off on the right foot.
  • Connect with Student Organizations
Get First Day Ready
  • Learn about all the resources we offer for success.
  • Review required textbooks and materials with your student.
  • Encourage your student to get an early start on exploring campus and planning for their first few days. They can also download the Naviagte360 app to get around.
  • Remind your student that it’s ok to ask for help! UNT staff will be on site the first two days of class to help students get to class.
